Artificial Intelligence (AI) has many definitions and has varied along the way. It has evolved at an incredible rate, allowing the different definitions to expand and become more and more complex, yet we can simplify them and explain the real meaning behind them all.

This article will explain AI in simple terms, how it has evolved to what it is today, why it is important for humankind, its advantages and disadvantages, uses of AI in different industries, and answer some frequently asked questions about AI you may have.

What is AI in simple words?

McCarthy gave one of the most simple definitions of AI: “the simulation of an intelligent behavior by a machine.” In other words, AI is about creating computers or robots that can think and learn like humans and perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, like solving problems, understanding language, or recognizing images.

Why is it important for humankind?

AI is crucial to humankind because it enhances efficiency, productivity, and decision-making across various fields, from energy to healthcare and many more areas. By automating routine tasks and optimizing complex processes, AI frees up human potential for more creative and strategic work.

In healthcare, AI improves the speed and accuracy of diagnoses, enables personalized treatments, and accelerates drug discovery. It also plays a vital role in solving complex global challenges like climate change and resource management by analyzing vast amounts of data and providing actionable insights, such as optimizing energy production and efficiency to meet green energy goals.

Moreover, AI significantly improves the quality of life by enhancing accessibility, supporting education, and enabling smart cities. It drives economic growth by creating new industries and job opportunities, while offering tools to promote inclusivity and address biases. AI's potential to contribute to sustainable development, from agriculture to urban planning, underscores its importance in shaping a better future for humanity.

A brief story about Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed from a theoretical concept to a pivotal technology driving innovation across industries. To truly appreciate its impact, it's essential to understand its historical progression, from its seminal works of the 1940s and 50s to the cutting-edge advancements shaping our world today.

The story of AI begins with the contributions of many researchers who can be considered the fathers of AI: Alan Turing, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, and others. Alan Turing was a mathematician and logician whose work laid the groundwork for modern computing and artificial intelligence. In 1950, Turing published a seminal paper titled "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," addressing the question, "Can machines think?" He proposed the famous Turing Test, a criterion for determining whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from a human's. This idea originated a new field of study, encouraging researchers to explore the possibility of creating machines capable of intelligent behavior.

Following Turing's ideas, the 1956 Dartmouth Conference is often cited as the birthplace of AI as a formal discipline. Here, researchers like John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon discussed the potential of machines to simulate aspects of human intelligence. McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence" and envisioned a future where machines could solve problems, understand language, and learn from experience.

Strong AI vs Weak AI

The initial focus of AI research was on symbolic AI (rule-based AI or weak AI), where systems were designed using explicit rules and logical reasoning. However, the limitations of these approaches became evident as they struggled to handle the complexity and ambiguity of real-world situations. Also, to obtain the rules, a human expert must transform human knowledge into a set of decisions that encode the reasoning. This led to the rise of machine learning, a paradigm shift in which systems learn patterns and make decisions based on data.

On the other hand, Strong AI, also known as General Artificial Intelligence, is a theoretical form of AI used to describe an AI that replicates human functions, such as reasoning, planning, and problem-solving. Although recent interesting progress has been made, this goal has not been achieved. For example, modern LLMs exhibit some problem-solving capabilities.

Types of AI

We can distinguish between two main types of practical AIs: weak AI (rule-based) and Machine Learning. As we said before, other forms of AI, like Strong or General, are still theoretical.

The state-of-the-art AI applications are based on Machine Learning, either classical or modern based on deep learning.

In the 1980s and 1990s, researchers like Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, and Yann LeCun pioneered neural networks, a subset of machine learning inspired by the structure and function of the human brain. LeCun's work on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) revolutionized computer vision, enabling machines to recognize and classify images with unprecedented accuracy. These were the origins of the area of deep learning.

The 21st century has witnessed an explosion of AI advancements, largely driven by the advent of deep learning. This subset of machine learning leverages large-scale neural networks with multiple layers to learn complex patterns in data. Yann LeCun and others like Hinton and Bengio were crucial in popularizing deep learning. LeCun's work, particularly in developing CNNs, has been instrumental in applications ranging from facial recognition to autonomous driving. Large amounts of data and computational power support the development of these large-scale models. These two elements were unavailable in the 80s and 90s when the theory behind the area was being developed.

Advantages and challenges of AI

AI offers numerous advantages, including increased efficiency and productivity, as it can automate routine tasks, optimize processes, and enhance decision-making across industries. AI improves diagnosis accuracy in healthcare and enables personalized treatments, leading to better patient outcomes. Additionally, AI drives innovation and economic growth, creating new opportunities and industries. It also enhances everyday life by providing convenience and support in education, customer service, and smart technologies.

However, AI poses significant challenges, particularly concerning privacy, bias, and job impacts. AI systems often require vast amounts of data, raising concerns about the potential misuse of personal information and threats to individual privacy. Moreover, AI can perpetuate or even exacerbate biases in the data it is trained on, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes in areas like hiring, lending, and law enforcement. The automation of jobs by AI can also lead to unemployment and economic inequality if displaced workers are not provided with opportunities for retraining and transitioning to new roles. Balancing these challenges requires careful consideration, ethical AI development, and robust regulatory frameworks.

AI in all industries

There are many use cases for AI in different fields. In what follows, we give examples of four areas highlighting the specific techniques applied.

In agriculture, AI enables precision farming by optimizing crop yields through data analysis on weather, soil, and plant health (data science, descriptive, diagnostic and predictive analytics). AI also powers automated harvesting machines and helps detect pests early (image analysis), leading to more sustainable farming practices.

In education, AI personalizes learning by adapting educational content to each student's needs (recommendation systems), improving engagement and outcomes. It also automates grading and provides AI-powered tutoring, offering students additional support outside the classroom (AI agents).

In retail, AI enhances the shopping experience by recommending products based on customer behavior (recommendation systems), optimizing inventory management by predicting demand (regression and prediction) and personalizing marketing efforts to target specific customer segments with tailored ads and offers.

In finance, AI improves security by detecting and preventing fraud (classification or detection), facilitates algorithmic trading with fast, data-driven decisions, and enhances customer support through AI chatbots (AI agents), making banking services more efficient and accessible.
